Right for photographs, wrong for everything else
A photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than it needs to be, and converting to JPEG at a sensible quality will shrink it dramatically with no visible difference. That is the case this page is for.
A screenshot, a logo, a diagram or anything with flat colour and hard edges is the opposite case. JPEG was designed for continuous tone and produces visible ringing around sharp edges — text in a screenshot converted to JPEG looks smeared. It can also come out larger than the PNG, because flat colour is exactly what PNG compresses well and JPEG does not.
If you want a smaller PNG without changing format, the image compressor runs oxipng, which is lossless and frequently takes far more off than a format change would.
Nothing is uploaded
The conversion runs in this tab. There is no upload step, so no queue, no daily limit and no account — and you can disconnect from the network and it still works. The same engine powers theimage converter, which handles any combination and unlimited batches, and theimage compressor, which makes a file smaller without changing its format. Both sit underConverters.
