Match a resume

Copies its name, contact details and whole design: template, colour, fonts, size, spacing and header. Your letter text is kept.

No resumes are saved in this browser yet. Make one in the resume builder and it appears here, ready to match.

Or start from an example in your field

Each opens a complete, hand-written letter to adapt. Type over it under Write.

Or start blank

Empty fields, the same design. The preview shows an example until you type.

In short

Match a resume saved by the resume builder and the letter takes its contact details and its whole design, header and all, so the two read as one application. Or start from one of16 hand-written examples, one per field. Write about 250 to 400 words on one page, clear the suggestions, and download a PDF, a Word file, or the resume and letter as one PDF, free.

What cover letter is

A one-page letter sent with a resume that says which job you want, the two or three results that make you a fit, and why this employer in particular. It is read before the resume, by a person rather than a parser, so its job is persuasion: the resume carries the full record.

What this tool does that others do not

  • Matched to your resume, mark for mark

Pick a resume saved by the resume builder and the letter copies its name, contact details and whole design: template, accent, both fonts, size, spacing, margins and header style. The header is not imitated. It is drawn by the resume’s own layout code, so the letterhead and the resume header are the same marks in the same places.

A test compares the two headers op for op on all 16 templates at A4 and US Letter: 32 pairs, each identical in kind and position.

  • Sixteen hand-written examples, one per field

Each field opens a complete letter from the same fictional person as that field’s example resume, built only on that resume’s facts. Every paragraph has its job named (opening, why you, why them, close) and the field’s own version beside it, to copy in and rewrite.

Every example runs to between 250 and 268 words and passes the tool’s own checks.

  • Checks you can act on, not a grade

The Download step lists what is worth fixing with the reason: more than one page, a body under 200 or over 450 words, “Dear Hiring Manager” when you have typed the manager’s name, a company the body never mentions, a run of sentences that all start with “I”, and a [Company] slot left unfilled.

  • One PDF with the resume, or Word

Download the letter as a PDF with embedded font subsets, as a Word file, or, when it is matched, as one PDF with the letter first and every page of the resume after it, both at the resume’s page size. Letters stay in this browser, several per resume.

How to use it

  1. Match your resume or pick your field

Under Start, choose a resume saved in this browser to copy its design and details, or a field for its example letter. The preview shows a full letter from the first moment.

  2. Write four short paragraphs

Open with the job and one strong reason, give two or three results with figures, say why this company, then ask for the conversation. About 250 to 400 words fits one page.

  3. Fill in the reader

A named person beats “Hiring Manager”. With a name typed, the greeting becomes “Dear” plus that name unless you write your own.

  4. Check, then download

Clear the suggestions, then download the PDF, the Word file, or the resume and letter as one PDF for portals that take a single upload.

Worked examples

Real input, real figures.

A designer matching a sidebar resume

You give it

Resume in Atelier (purple sidebar, Poppins and DM Sans, A4)

You get

The letter takes Atelier’s one-column header, the same one its one-column PDF uses, with the same purple #6b3fa0, fonts and margins. A letter has no sidebar, so nothing else of the sidebar is drawn.

A generic greeting with a name already known

You give it

Recipient: Hannah Reid. Greeting typed as “Dear Hiring Manager,”

You get

One suggestion, labelled Consider: use “Dear Hannah Reid,” instead. Clear the greeting field and the letter uses the name on its own.

Guide

What it will not do

  • No text is generated for you. The examples are hand-written starting points, and a letter that reads as your own needs your own results in it.
  • Matching reads resumes saved in this browser by the resume builder. A resume made elsewhere has to be imported there first.
  • The PDF fonts cover Western European languages. For any other script, download the Word file.
  • Letters are saved in this browser only, so clearing site data deletes them. Download a copy of anything you want to keep.

What each paragraph does

The order most letters follow. Each step in the builder names its job and shows your field’s example.

  1. 1. Opening

Name the job and give one reason to keep reading: your strongest result, or who referred you.

  2. 2. Why you

Two or three results from your resume that answer what the advert asks for, with figures.

  3. 3. Why them

Something specific about this company: a product, a goal, a value you share. Not flattery.

  4. 4. Close

Ask for the conversation, say when you are free, and thank them. Two or three sentences.

One header, drawn once

Most builders that offer a “matching” letter keep a second template that imitates the resume. The two drift: a margin here, a font size there, and the pair stops looking like a set. Here the letterhead is produced by the same layout code as the resume header. A test lays out both for every one of the16 templates, at A4 and at US Letter, and fails unless every mark in the header is the same kind of mark in the same place.

The rest of the letter uses the resume’s fonts, text size, line spacing and margins, and its accent for the subject line. The date follows the resume’s date format, with the month first on US Letter and the day first on A4, so a numeric date is read the right way round.

Questions people ask

Straight answers. Each one links directly: copy the address after opening it.

How does the letter match my resume?

Under Start, pick a resume saved in this browser by the resume builder. The letter copies its name, job title and contact details, and its whole design: template, accent colour, both fonts, text size, line spacing, margins, header style, date format and page size. The header is drawn by the resume’s own layout code, so it is the same header, not a lookalike. A sidebar template becomes its one-column header, since a letter has no sidebar.

Is the download free, and is anything uploaded?

Both are free: the PDF, the Word file and the combined resume-and-letter PDF, with no account or watermark. Nothing is uploaded. Letters are made and saved in this browser, and the resume is read from this browser’s own storage.

How long should a cover letter be?

One page, and usually about 250 to 400 words in three to five paragraphs. The checks suggest a change below 200 or above 450 words, or when the letter runs onto a second page.

Who should I address it to?

A named person when you can find one: the hiring manager in the advert, or the head of the team on the company’s site or LinkedIn. Leave the name empty and the letter opens “Dear Hiring Manager,”. With a name typed, it opens “Dear” and that name, unless you write a greeting of your own.

Does it write the letter for me?

No. There is no AI here and nothing is generated. Each of the 16 fields has a complete hand-written example, and every paragraph shows that field’s version to copy in and rewrite with your own results.

Can I send the resume and the letter as one file?

Yes, when the letter is matched to a resume saved here. “Download resume + letter” makes one PDF with the letter first and every resume page after it, both at the resume’s page size.
