PDF to text
The words, in reading order. Not a layout, and it says so.
or drop it here
Nothing is uploaded. Your file never leaves this tab.
What PDF text extraction is
Reading the glyphs a PDF contains, with their coordinates, and emitting them as a string. A PDF does not store paragraphs — the paragraph you see is something your eye assembles — so extraction returns the file’s internal order, which is usually but not always reading order.
What this tool does that others do not
It is labelled as text, not as a document
Recovering columns, tables and headings means inferring structure that was never recorded. Every free tool claiming to do it returns a flat run of text with the tables destroyed. This gives you that same text and is honest about what it is.
Runs in the tab, on any size of document
Nothing is uploaded and there is no page cap, so pulling the words out of a 300-page report is the same operation as pulling them out of a receipt — the only difference is how long your own processor takes.
How to use it
Run it and read the first page of output
That tells you immediately whether the document has a text layer and whether its internal order matches reading order.
Expect interleaving in multi-column layouts
Two columns often interleave, and text in headers, footers or floating boxes can appear anywhere in the stream.
If nothing comes out, the file is a scan
An image of a page with no text layer. Getting words out of that needs OCR, which is a different and much heavier operation.
Worked example
Real input, real figures.
A two-column academic paper
You give it
A PDF with a two-column body and a running header.
You get
The text arrives complete but partly interleaved, because the order is the file’s internal order rather than the visual one. There is no reliable general fix without layout analysis, and no browser-side library implements it.
Against “PDF to Word”
| Aspect | This tool | A free PDF-to-Word converter |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | The text, labelled as text | A .docx of flat paragraphs |
| Tables | Not claimed | Claimed, and destroyed |
| Columns | May interleave, and says so | Silently flattened |
| Honesty about structure | Stated on the page | Implied by the file extension |
Guide
What it will not do
- No OCR. A scanned page has no text layer to extract, and recognising glyphs from pixels is a different operation with a much larger download.
- No Word output. The open-source route produces a document with every paragraph on its own line and the tables gone, which is worse than useless for anything anybody would actually convert.
Text, not layout — and the difference matters
A PDF does not contain paragraphs. It contains glyphs with coordinates, and the paragraph you see is something your eye assembles. Extraction reads those glyphs in the order the file lists them, which is usually but not always reading order.
This is why we do not offer "PDF to Word". Recovering columns, tables and headings means inferring structure that was never recorded, and every free tool that claims to do it returns a flat run of text with the tables destroyed. This tool gives you that same text and is honest about what it is.
Questions people ask
Straight answers. Each one links directly: copy the address after opening it.
Why is the text out of order in places?
Because the order is the file’s internal order, not the visual one. A two-column layout often interleaves, and text in headers, footers or floating boxes can appear anywhere. There is no reliable general fix without layout analysis of the kind that no browser-side library implements.
Why is there no text at all?
The PDF is almost certainly a scan — an image of a page with no text layer. Getting text out of that needs OCR, which is a different and much heavier operation.
Can I get a Word document instead?
Not from us, and not honestly from any free browser tool. The open-source route produces a document with every paragraph on its own line and the tables gone, which is worse than useless for anything you would actually convert. See the PDF overview page for the full reasoning.
Nothing leaves your device
Your file is read into this tab and worked on there. It is never uploaded, which is why there is no queue, no daily limit and no account, and why the tool still works with the network switched off.
