Social media image sizes
One photo to every platform’s size, each from the platform’s own page, checked against its upload limit.

In short
Instagram posts are up to 1080 × 1440 (3:4), a Facebook Page cover is 851 × 315, an X header 1500 × 500, a LinkedIn profile background 1584 × 396 and a YouTube thumbnail 3840 × 2160 under 2 MB from a phone — each from the platform’s own help page, read 8 October 2026. Drop one photo above, tap the subject, and every size comes out cropped around it, under its upload limit, in one .zip.
Every size, by platform
30 sizes from 12 platforms, each read on 8 October 2026. “Limit” is the upload limit the platform enforces; “Not stated” means the page gives none. Where only a shape is published, the pixel size is ours and says so.

Platforms that publish no image sizes
- TikTok. Its help centre publishes no profile or photo-post image size, and its ads help site could not be reached on the date checked.
- Threads. No image size or ratio on a Threads or Meta help page; the Meta ads guide page for Threads returned an error.
- Snapchat. The ad specification page returned “not found” on the date checked.
- WhatsApp. Meta publishes a 5 MB limit for JPEG and PNG images sent through the Business Platform, and no dimensions.
Figures for these circulate on size-guide blogs. Without a page from the platform to check them against, they are left out here rather than printed as fact.
What social media image size is
The width, height, shape and file-size limit a platform expects for one place an image appears: a profile picture, a cover, a post, a thumbnail. Anything else is cropped, shrunk or recompressed by the platform. Here each comes from the platform’s own page, quoted and dated.
What this tool does that others do not
Every number traced to the platform
Each size links the help page it came from and quotes the words that set it, and a test fails if a number is missing from its quote. Platforms that publish nothing are listed as publishing nothing rather than given a number from a blog.
30 sizes from 12 platforms’ own pages, read 8 October 2026. Instagram’s own page allows posts up to 1080 × 1440 (3:4); widely copied guides still say 1080 × 1350.
Safe zones drawn where they are published
Where a platform says part of the frame may be covered or cut, the zone is drawn over the crop, and the focal point is checked against it.
Meta: keep about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side clear on Story ads. X: 60 px at the top and bottom of a 1500 × 500 header may be cropped. YouTube: a 1235 × 338 safe area on a 2048 × 1152 banner.
Checked against the upload limit
Each output is measured in bytes against the platform’s limit and fitted under it when needed, so the file you download is one the platform will take.
A 3840 × 2160 YouTube thumbnail must be under 2 MB when uploaded from a phone; a Bluesky avatar or banner under 1,000,000 bytes.
How to use it
Choose one photo
The larger the better: a 1584 × 396 LinkedIn background or a 3840 × 2160 thumbnail cannot be made sharp from a small source.
Tap the subject
Every crop is placed around that point, from a 4:1 banner to a 9:16 Story, and each card says whether it lands inside the safe zone.
Tick the sizes
Grouped by platform. Six common ones are ticked to start; each shows its source and the date it was read.
Download them all
Press Make once; after that the sizes are remade as you move the subject or change the ticks. Each comes out at exactly its size, under its limit, named by platform and size, and the set downloads as one .zip.
Worked examples
Real input, real figures.
One photo for a launch week
You give it
A 4032 × 3024 photo; Instagram 3:4 post, LinkedIn background, X header and YouTube thumbnail ticked.
You get
1080 × 1440, 1584 × 396, 1500 × 500 and 3840 × 2160, all cropped around the same point; the thumbnail held under 2 MB, and the X header’s top and bottom 60 px marked as at risk.
Checking a ratio by hand
You give it
A 16:9 frame 1920 wide, and a 1200 × 630 link image.
You get
1080 tall for the 16:9 frame. 1200 × 630 reduces to 40:21, which is 0.27% off 1.91:1, the shape Meta and LinkedIn ask for.
Against a typical size guide
| Aspect | This page | Typical size guide |
|---|---|---|
| Source for each size | The platform’s own page, linked and quoted | Rarely linked |
| Date | Each size dated | One date for the whole page |
| Upload limits | Shown, and each file checked against them | Listed, if at all |
| Making the files | One photo to every size, in the browser | Templates, or a paid editor |
| No published size | Said so (TikTok, Threads, Snapchat) | A number anyway |
Guide
What it will not do
- The Instagram Story size is Meta’s ad specification: Instagram publishes no size for an ordinary Story or profile photo.
- Platforms change these without notice. Each size carries the date it was read; check the linked page before a campaign that depends on it.
Aspect ratio calculator
The other side for a ratio, or the ratio of a size you have. 1200 × 630 reduces to 40:21, which is 0.27% off 1.91:1, the shape Meta and LinkedIn ask for link images.
Other side, for a ratio
1920 × 1080
1920 × 9 ÷ 16 = 1080 → 1080
Ratio of a size
40:21 (≈ 1.91:1)
1200 ÷ 630 = 1.9048; reduced 40:21; nearest common ratio 1.91:1, 0.27% off
Checking that nothing was uploaded
Open your browser’s developer tools on the Network tab and make the sizes. The resize engine and its JPEG encoder arrive from dsyn.studio on first use; your photo never leaves the tab. To resize a whole batch to one size, a print size or a file size, use resize image.
