How to rearrange and delete pages in a PDF

Add the PDF to Organise PDF and wait for the thumbnails. Click a page to mark it for removal, drag pages or use the arrows beneath them to change the order, and check the number under each page: it is that page's position in the new file. Press Organise PDF and download. The pages you keep are copied into a fresh file, so removed pages are not in it.

Deleting page 14 is easy when you know which one page 14 is. The trouble is that the number printed at the foot of a page is often not its place in the file: a cover, a contents spread or a blank verso pushes the count along, and “delete page 14” removes the wrong sheet. Working from pictures of the pages avoids the guess.

Two terms

Organising a PDF means deciding which pages survive and in what order, by looking at rendered thumbnails rather than typing page numbers you have had to work out in advance. The operation underneath is the same one a splitter performs; what changes is that you can see each page before you commit.

A page’s position is its place in the file, counted from 1 at the first page. It is the only numbering a PDF tool can act on, and it is what the tool shows under every thumbnail.

Rearranging and deleting, step by step

  1. Open Organise PDF and choose Add a PDF, or drop the file in. For a protected document, type its password when asked.
  2. Wait while it reads “Rendering pages”. Each page is drawn by pdf.js, the engine Firefox uses to display PDFs, running in the tab. A short text document is near-instant; a hundred-page scan takes a few seconds of your own processor’s time.
  3. Click any page you want gone. It fades, a “removed” badge appears over it, and its number turns into a dash. Click it again to bring it back.
  4. Move pages by dragging them in the grid, or with the left and right arrows under each one, which also work from the keyboard. The order in the grid is the order you get.
  5. Check the numbers under the thumbnails (the next section explains them), then press Organise PDF.
  6. Read the confirmation, which says how many pages were kept, for example “5 of 6 pages kept, in the order shown”, and download the file. It is named after the original with “-organised” added.

Removing every page is refused with “That would remove every page”, rather than producing a file most readers will not open.

Reading the numbers under the thumbnails

The figure under each page is where that page will sit in the new file. When it differs from the page’s original position, the tool adds “was” and the old number. Here is a six-page document after two actions: page 2 clicked for removal, and page 6 dragged to the front.

Original page What you did Shown under the thumbnail Position in the new file
6 Dragged to the front 1 ·was 6 1
1 Nothing 2 ·was 1 2
2 Clicked to remove A dash, page faded Not in the file
3 Nothing 3 3
4 Nothing 4 4
5 Nothing 5 5

Page 3 carries no “was” note even though a page was removed before it and another inserted. One removal and one insertion ahead of it cancel out, so it lands in position 3 again. The absence of a note means the position is unchanged, not that nothing around the page moved. Read the column of numbers top to bottom as the new document’s running order; if it reads 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 with nothing skipped, the file will be what you expect.

What happens to the pages you remove

The tool does not cut pages out of your file. It creates a new document and copies into it the pages you kept, in the order shown. Anything only a removed page used is never copied, so removal is real in the download, which matters if the reason for deleting a page was what was on it. Your original file is unchanged on disk; if you need a removed page back, start again from that.

Not every editor deletes this way. What lossless PDF compression saves, measured shows what can survive inside a file whose pages were deleted by loading and re-saving the same document, and why rebuilding is the safer method.

Building a fresh document has one cost. The bookmark outline and interactive form fields belong to the document rather than to any page, so they do not travel with the copied pages. A contract with fillable fields or a manual with a long bookmark tree will come out with neither. Links drawn on a page stay with it.

Other ways to rearrange PDF pages

On macOS, Preview does all of this. View → Thumbnails opens a page sidebar; drag thumbnails to reorder them, and select one and press Delete to remove it. File → Export saves the result as a copy and leaves the original alone. This guide has not measured what Preview leaves inside the saved file.

On the command line, qpdf builds a new file from a list of pages, so the list is the whole running order:

qpdf input.pdf --pages . 3,1,2,4-z -- reordered.pdf

That puts page 3 first, then pages 1 and 2, then 4 through to the last page (z). A page left out of the list is not in the output.

On Windows, there is no built-in way to reorder pages. Printing a page range to Microsoft Print to PDF saves only those pages as a new file, which trims pages from either end but cannot change their order.

A test that the pages never left the tab

The thumbnails are the best evidence. Open the developer tools on the Network tab and add a long document. You will see the page’s own code arrive, including the pdf.js renderer the first time a file goes in, but the page images themselves are produced in the tab from the file you chose: if the panel lists them at all, it lists them as data: addresses made by the page, not as requests to a server. Then remove a few pages, reorder, and save. The downloaded file is assembled locally, and no request carrying your document appears.

Organise PDF is free to use as often as you need. To pull out one continuous section instead, Split PDF does it from two numbers, and pages that came out of the scanner sideways can be fixed with Rotate PDF.
